Still Experimenting
by Robyn Gittleman, Director of the Experimental College

People very often ask, “How, after forty years, can you still call yourselves the Experimental College”? With this online newsletter we can, to some extent, answer that question. We decided to experiment and see if we could reach more people because we have learned that many of you change street addresses, and we lose contact too often.
Twenty years ago this would have been unthinkable, perhaps even five years ago we would have felt that too many ExCollege people might have been left out, but this is a new era. Indeed, our newly formed Advisory Council will have its first meeting via the Internet very soon and more people signed up for an on-line version of the Genetics, Ethics and the Law course than the in class version. As you already know, things are changing!

Forty Years and Counting
by Chadwick Matlin, A '07

Katie Drizos, Chad Matlin, and Terin Holbrook paint the cannon for our 40th anniversary campus celebration.

In 1964, Tufts University planted the seeds for a revolution in higher education. Now, 40 years later, those seeds have sprouted to become the one-of-a-kind Experimental College. After having accomplished so much, the ExCollege felt the need to celebrate, and celebrate they did. To start the anniversary year off with a bang, the ExCollege put out an open call to all student artists on Tufts campus. Students were promised 100 dollars if they created a winning ExCollege logo highlighting the department’s 40th anniversary. Nora Martin-Cooley won the competition with an intertwined “x” and “c” surrounded by two golden olive branches.

Explaining Explorations
by Jenna Dreher, A '06

What exactly is an Explorations class? The concept is hard for most people to understand, especially for those who have never been to Tufts before. The act of trying to explain this unusual, yet fantastic phenomenon usually leads to a conversation that goes something like this.

Person: “You mean that you’re going to be a TA, right?”
Me: “No, really, I’m teaching a class with another student. We’re teaching a class to incoming freshmen at Tufts.”
Person: “Yeah, okay, sure, Professor (followed by muffled laughter).

The Colloquium Series: A Successful Return
by Elliot Freeman, A '04, Program Assistant

The Colloquium Series is back! The original ExCollege Colloquium Series was founded in Spring 1972, offering non-credit open lectures and directed projects on a variety of topics of current interest. Colloquia varied in terms of length, content, and presentational methods, involving no formal registration or student accountability. A related initiative, the Life Experiences Program, was started in 1977, with support from a Mellon Foundation grant, to help undergraduates make decisions about their future lifestyles and careers.
